Good work deserves a proper reward, but there's always some idiot in a fancy suit who thinks they can cheap out on it. Sadly, they're usually left unchallenged by most people because the fear of being unemployed is a powerful one.

Every so often, however, an employee will come along who is keenly aware of their own worth and actually pushes back. That's precisely what happened here. The employee knew what the rules of the game were and how they could best utilize their rights to screw over the company. In the end, not giving him a well-deserved raise cost the company hundreds of thousands in lost business!
